Ko'olina Lagoons

Oahu Beaches - Ko'olina Lagoon 4
In the west of Oahu lies Ko’olina, a planned resort area with the famous Disney Resort Aulani. There are a total of 4 lagoons, all of which are publicly accessible. Since the lagoons were artificially created, they offer calm and sheltered waters for families. All lagoons are connected by a footpath, where you can also easily take a stroll with a stroller. The easiest way to park is at Lagoon 4, which has the largest free parking lot as well as a paid parking lot at the marina. At all lagoons, you’ll find restrooms and water dispensers. Unfortunately, the lagoons have strict rules, and you’re not allowed to use a sun umbrella here. If you’re lucky, you might find a shady spot under a tree. Especially on weekends, the beach is popular with local families. Some people snorkel in the lagoons, but this can be dangerous for children due to strong currents near the rocks. Unfortunately, there are no lifeguards either.

Magic Island Lagoon

Oahu Beaches - Magic Island Lagoon
The lagoon is located in Ala Moana Beach Park and was artificially created for a hotel complex that was never built. Due to the surrounding walls, the water is very calm and shallow, which we find ideal for families. Children can easily go into the water here and take their first swimming attempts in the sea or simply build a sandcastle on the beach. A lifeguard is also present during the day.For families, it’s particularly convenient that there’s a parking lot and a restroom nearby. If you’re there on a Friday, you shouldn’t miss the fireworks from the Hilton Hawaiian Village, as they can be easily watched from the park.

Hilton Lagoon, Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon

Oahu Beaches - Hilton Lagoon

The Hilton Lagoon is actually a small artificial lake next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The lagoon was artificially built and unfortunately doesn’t have a fine sandy beach. The beach is rather hard and coarse-grained, somewhat artificial, but the beach and the water are shallow. We find this sheltered water basin to be excellent for families. The only drawback is that there are no lifeguards on site.
Next to the lagoon, there’s a parking lot, but you have to walk a few meters to reach the restrooms in the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The restrooms are somewhat hidden among the many shops, and there’s also a water dispenser there.

Waikiki Beach, Kuhio Beach

Oahu Beaches - Kuhio Beach
Centrally located in Waikiki, Waikiki Beach Central and Kuhio Beach are situated around Kuhio Beach Park. This section of the beach is separated from the open sea by a wall, making the water calmer, like in a natural pool. This allows children to play well on the beach and splash in the water. Lifeguards are also on site. Since the beach is in the heart of Waikiki, it can be easily reached on foot. By car, however, it’s less practical as there are no direct parking spaces. On the other hand, a restroom and numerous shops can be found within walking distance. As the beach is so centrally located, it’s naturally popular with many visitors. The sunset is also particularly beautiful.

Kahala Beach

Oahu Beaches - Kahala Beach

Away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, Kahala Beach lies at the foot of Damon Head. The beach is shallow and the water is calm and quiet, which makes it particularly popular with families. Since the beach is outside the city, it’s quieter here.
You can park in an adjacent parking lot, and a restroom is available. Between the beach and the parking lot is the small Wai’alae Beach Park, with picnic tables under a pergola and a water dispenser.
Many locals spend their free time here on weekends, as do many wedding couples.
