Rhodes in April: Family Vacation with Sun & Fun for Kids

Rhodes, Greece’s sun-drenched island, is not only known for its ancient ruins and beautiful beaches but also an ideal destination for a family vacation. For those who especially want to spend time with family in the sun over Easter, Rhodes is an excellent choice. In this blog post, we’ll give you valuable information on weather, flights, accommodation, and activities to help you plan your unforgettable trip to Greece. Because it’s definitely worth visiting Rhodes in April!

Weather in Rhodes in April

Rhodes already offers mild and pleasant weather around Easter. Average temperatures typically range between 18°C and 23°C. The sun shines frequently during this time, so you can spend most of your time outdoors.

During the day, it was pleasantly warm, so we could wear light clothing. However, UV radiation was already quite high in April, and we used sun hats and sunscreen. In the evenings, it got noticeably cooler, and we put on long pants and light cardigans.

With water temperatures of around 18°C in the sea and pool, swimming in Rhodes in April is only partially inviting. We ventured a quick dip in the water and then let the sun’s rays warm us up again. For children, it’s advisable to bring a wetsuit from Germany.

Flights to Rhodes

Rhodes is easily accessible by plane from many German airports such as Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, or Berlin. Numerous airlines like TUIfly, Condor, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and Ryanair offer regular direct flights to Rhodes. The average flight duration from Germany is between 3 and 4 hours.

The international airport on Rhodes is called “Diagoras International Airport”. It is located about 14 kilometers southwest of Rhodes City and is the island’s main airport. The airport’s IATA code is “RHO”.

We flew with Condor from Düsseldorf to Rhodes. Our outbound flight departed at 6 AM and lasted 3 hours and 25 minutes. The counters in the departure hall were very crowded, and once again, we were glad to be traveling with only hand luggage. For the security check at Düsseldorf Airport, we had pre-booked our personal time slot with the new DUSgateway (72 hours before departure). This free service was introduced in April 2023 and promises shorter waiting times to the gate. During our trip, this service worked smoothly, and we were happy about the short waiting time.

The return flight departed with a slight delay at 8 PM. The flight duration on the way back was 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Accommodation for Families

Rhodes offers a wide selection of accommodations ideal for families with children. Many hotels offer family rooms, childcare facilities, children’s pools, and child-friendly restaurants. It’s worth looking for family-friendly resorts or holiday apartments to make the most of your vacation. For example, on booking.com*, you can filter your search according to your individual preferences.

Since the high season on Rhodes extends from mid-May to mid-October, you can still find many budget-friendly offers in Rhodes in April.

We first stayed a week in a holiday apartment and ate in the island’s many tavernas. Afterward, we stayed a week in an all-inclusive resort* and enjoyed all the amenities of a hotel vacation.

Transport

On Rhodes, there are various means of transportation to explore the island. Here are the most common options:

Rental Car

Renting a car is a popular way to be flexible and independent on Rhodes. There are several car rental companies* on the island, both at the airport and in the larger towns. Child seats can be brought from home or rented locally.

Taxi

Taxis are widely available on Rhodes and offer a convenient way to get around the island. They can be found at taxi stands or by phone order. You should bring your own child seats.

Bus

Rhodes’ public transportation system includes bus connections to various destinations on the island. There are regular bus services, especially between the larger towns and tourist areas.

On Foot

In some areas, especially in historic old towns like Rhodes City, it’s possible to explore many sights on foot. This is a great way to discover the narrow streets and charming squares.

We decided to book a rental car to explore the island at our leisure. We searched for a suitable car through a car rental comparison portal*. The best offer we found was a car from the local provider greenmotion.

Activities for Families

Thanks to the pleasant temperatures in Rhodes in April, many activities on land and in the water are possible.

Farma of Rhodes Petting Zoo

In this petting zoo, you can have a unique interactive experience with animals. Together with your family, you can get to know, pet, and feed ostriches, llamas, kangaroos, donkeys, camels, and lemurs, as well as many other animals. There’s also a playground for children. Furthermore, there’s a kiosk and a restaurant where you can even try ostrich eggs.

We had an unforgettable afternoon at the zoo and took many souvenir photos. During our two-hour visit, we were able to discover all the animals and, to finish, enjoy a delicious cappuccino while our daughter played on the playground.

Aquarium

The Rhodes Aquarium is a great place to explore the underwater world without getting wet. Children can experience various fish species and marine life up close and playfully learn about marine biology.

During our half-hour tour, in addition to the many small and large aquariums, we also tried an interactive saltwater pool. We got to pet starfish and lobsters here, which was a special experience.

Aqua Park

The water park at Labranda Blue Bay Resort can be used free of charge by hotel guests and for a fee by day visitors. A variety of slides are available for both young and old family members. For toddlers and babies, there’s a water spray park and a pirate ship with slides. Numerous sun loungers and parasols are available for sunbathing and relaxing. Furthermore, there’s a kiosk with drinks and ice cream.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the water park. Our daughter spent many hours on the pirate ship while we parents relaxed on the sun loungers.

Beaches

Rhodes boasts an impressive number of beaches with various characteristics. Besides a few sandy beaches, the island primarily features pebble beaches. There are smaller coves and long beaches. During the off-season, you often have the beach to yourself and can enjoy the tranquility.

During our two-week stay, we tried out many beaches. Since every beach and cove had its own charms, we can’t even decide which one we liked best.

Playgrounds

The Greek island is very child-friendly and has many playgrounds to offer. The playgrounds have equipment for various age groups.

Our daughter really liked the playground in Ialysos. It’s located directly on the beach and offers a variety of play options. Furthermore, there’s a restroom, a kiosk, and many benches available.

Conclusion

Rhodes is a wonderful destination for a vacation with children. With a variety of activities, pleasant weather, good flight connections, and family-friendly accommodations, you and your children will have an unforgettable time on this sun-drenched island. Take the opportunity to experience the natural beauty, the beaches, and the hospitality of Greek culture.
