This summer, we tried out a camper for the first time and took a great low-budget road trip with a roadsurfer camper. We did a roadsurfer Rally for seven days. We will fondly remember this relaxing trip with our child for a long time. In this article, you’ll find out how we spent a week in a camper for just €99.

ToggleWhat exactly is a roadsurfer Rally?
The Munich-based company roadsurfer has been on the market since 2016 and now has numerous locations throughout Europe and Los Angeles in the USA.
Accordingly, new vehicles, for example, have to be brought from the roadsurfer compound in Marburg to various destinations throughout Europe. Sometimes vehicles from neighboring countries also have to be brought back to Marburg to be repaired or replaced, or vehicles have to be moved between stations.
The roadsurfer Rally is therefore a transfer trip for a camping vehicle. Therefore, you can only select your trip from a list and for specific time periods.
Advantages and disadvantages of the roadsurfer Rally
Advantages
You only pay €99 for a 7-day rental and can travel with up to 4 people.
You can freely choose your route between start and finish and don’t have to worry about kilometers on the odometer.
You can specify a total of two drivers for your roadsurfer Rally without paying a surcharge.
Your camper is already equipped with kitchen utensils for four adults and two children, so you can cook on the go.
On request, you can book a dog package and take your four-legged friend with you.
A basic insurance for the camper is already included in the roadsurfer Rally. On request and for an extra charge, you can also reduce the amount of the deductible.
Disadvantages
Only certain periods are offered, so you have to be flexible and cannot specify a desired date.
You can book the roadsurfer Rally for a maximum of 7 days.
You have to decide on a selected route from A to B.
Since these are one-way rentals, you have to get back home before or after your roadsurfer Rally and organize a ride for this.
With the transfer trips, it is currently not possible to book accessories such as bed linen or mobile toilets.
You cannot select a specific camper model. However, you can see in the list which model is to be transferred.
Booking a roadsurfer Rally
Direct booking with roadsurfer
You can book the roadsurfer Rally in the classic way on the website of roadsurfer. Here you will find selected trips in a list. There is a calendar where you can see the available periods.
Booking via the Movacar platform
Movacar is a platform for brokering vehicles. In the app or on the website you can filter for motorhomes and have start and destination locations displayed on a map. You can also filter by date.
Picking up your roadsurfer camper and first impression
The day of pick-up arrived, and with it the excitement of seeing our camper for the first time. Before pick-up, you will already receive instructions for the campervan. At pick-up, everything was explained to us again in detail – from filling it with fresh water and leveling the vehicle when camping to setting up the roof. Our camper was a brand new VW T6.1 California Ocean with only 21 km on the clock. The vehicle was clean, fully fueled and ready for our adventure. We only had to fill up with fresh water ourselves, as this is not possible at the compound in Marburg.
The trip
Preparation and start
Packed with our hand luggage and the expectation of an unforgettable adventure in our hearts, our journey began in the iconic VW Bus. Before we started, we familiarized ourselves again with the vehicle and its functions to ensure that we could fully utilize all the amenities and technical aids.
Driving comfort
The equipment of the "Ocean Suite"
On the way
During our journey through Germany, Austria and finally Italy, we were able to fully enjoy the breathtaking landscapes thanks to the panoramic windows of the “Ocean Suite”. Although we encountered narrow roads and heavy traffic in cities on some sections, the camper mastered these challenges with ease. Thanks to the compact size of the VW van, we never had any trouble finding a parking space.
Finding the perfect pitch for the camper
When you’re traveling in a camper, one of the biggest adventures is often finding the perfect place to park and spend the night. There are many options, from wild camping to staying at a campsite. Along the way, we visited various free motorhome parking spaces as well as paid parking spaces.
Wild camping - pure adventure
- Find out about local laws and regulations. Wild camping is prohibited or restricted in many countries and regions.
- Pay attention to nature conservation. Leave the place as you found it, leave no garbage and do not make an open fire.
- Be discreet and respect the privacy of others. Avoid camping near residential buildings or public facilities.
Simple pitch or parking space - practical and uncomplicated
Campsite - comfort and community
- Pay attention to the parking regulations. Parking spaces are often time-limited or subject to a fee.
- Safety is important. Do not park in remote or unsafe places, especially in cities.
- Respect others. Even if it's just a parking lot, you should avoid noise and respect the privacy of others and not unpack all your camping equipment. This can lead to expensive penalties, especially in southern countries.
- Book in advance. Campsites can be fully booked quickly, especially in high season.
- Find out about the facilities and rules of the site. Not all campsites are the same.
- Take the opportunity to get to know other campers and families. There are often community activities or areas that invite you to exchange ideas and socialize. Especially with children, you can quickly make connections and the little ones can find new playmates.
Our tip: park4night
We used the park4night app on our road trip and often spontaneously decided on parking spaces. Sometimes a little luck is required, because especially in summer the beautiful and free or cheap parking spaces are quickly occupied.
In the free basic version of the app you can see a variety of pitches. In the paid premium version you can see all pitches and also filter by criteria such as shower and toilet. We find this very practical, as you don’t have a full bathroom in the VW California.
The relaxed life in the camper
A day in the Ocean Suite
The small, large space miracle
The kitchen area
The trunk
In the trunk you will find the roadsurfer kitchen box. Here you will find all the dishes and kitchen utensils for 4 adults and 2 children. Since the box is very well equipped, it is unfortunately correspondingly large and takes up about a quarter of the trunk.
We had just enough space in the trunk for our hand luggage and our compact travel stroller. However, if you are traveling with more luggage or have a larger stroller, it will be more difficult to fit everything in.
The auxiliary heating
The bathroom without a toilet
Due to its compact size, the camper does not have a full bathroom. However, we were able to brush our teeth perfectly at the sink in the kitchen area. A cold water shower is also available at the rear of the tailgate. For us, this was perfect for being able to shower off after a day at the beach.
When renting in the classic way via roadsurfer, you can also rent a chemical toilet as an accessory. This is not possible with the roadsurfer Rally.
The outdoor area
The freedom of the "Ocean Suite"
You can go wherever you want and stay wherever you like. You are independent and can design your vacation exactly as you want it. Today a day at the lake, tomorrow a hike in the mountains and the day after tomorrow a stroll through the city – everything is possible in the “Ocean Suite”!
Especially with a child, it is nice to be able to stop anywhere and also be able to cook or spend the night with a view wherever you want.
The farewell and return of your roadsurfer camper
We were very sad to return our beloved roadsurfer camper and end our road trip.
You can find a clear overview of everything that needs to be considered when returning the vehicle in the customer login at roadsurfer. We had to empty the water tank, fill up the diesel tank and sweep the camper.
Our conclusion on the roadsurfer Rally
After a week of adventure and discovery, we can say that we have taken our roadsurfer camper to our hearts. The “Ocean Suite” exceeded our expectations and offered us an unforgettable experience.
We can highly recommend the roadsurfer rental company, it is an excellent camper rental company. Both the booking process and the on-site service were first class.
Overall, I can say that our experience of the roadsurfer Rally with the “Ocean Suite” VW T6.1 California Ocean was very positive. Whether you are experienced campers or looking for your first camping adventure, Roadsurfer definitely has something for you!
We will definitely do a roadsurfer Rally again.
