During our visit, we were all totally thrilled. When do you ever get the chance to get so close to reptiles? It’s a visit we certainly won’t forget anytime soon!

Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre - a marine and reptile paradise in Hersonissos

The Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre in Hersonissos is more than just another aquarium; it’s a place where marine love and reptile enthusiasm meet. Located in the charming coastal town of Hersonissos, this center invites families to immerse themselves in the magical underwater world while getting to know some of Crete’s most impressive reptiles.

As you stroll through the artfully designed aquariums, you and your children will discover the colorful and diverse underwater world of the Mediterranean. Exotic fish, elegant marine animals and vibrant corals captivate every visitor. But that’s not all! The Rescue Centre is a home for rescued and orphaned reptiles. Here you get the rare chance to see these impressive creatures up close and learn more about their habits and characteristics.

Every visit to Aquaworld supports the center’s mission to protect endangered marine and reptile species. This makes the trip not only an educational experience, but you also actively contribute to animal welfare. Whether it’s the fascinating play of colors in the aquarium or the exciting stories of the rescued reptiles – this place is guaranteed to provide unforgettable moments. A must for any visit to Crete with children!

We thought the marine life in the numerous aquariums was great. There were many animals to admire and the aquariums were very well maintained. The reptile garden was also interesting, but it was too crowded for us and you had to watch where you stepped. Once the turtle ran over our feet, it was quite heavy!

Fun in the water

Star Beach Water Park - a sparkling paradise for adventurers in Hersonissos

Imagine a place where laughter and squeals of delight fill the air and splashes of water glisten in the sun. Welcome to Star Beach Water Park in Hersonissos! A true wonderland of slides, pools and play areas that make children’s hearts beat faster.

While the little ones rush from one slide to the next and have fun in the cool water, parents can enjoy a moment of peace and relax under the bright Cretan sun. The great thing? Access to this oasis for children doesn’t cost a cent!

Of course, there are options to increase comfort with sunbeds and umbrellas, but you can also just sit on one of the cozy benches and watch the colorful hustle and bustle. And don’t worry about small or large hunger in between – a well-stocked mini-market and an atmospheric beach bar ensure that no wish remains unfulfilled. And although you are not allowed to bring your own snacks, we tried the offers of the beach café and were thrilled with the quality and price!

A little tip for the end: If the hustle and bustle in the middle of the park gets too much for you, just retreat to the quieter corners. No matter where, the most important thing is that you spend a sparkling and unforgettable time together on Crete with children!

For us as parents, the water park was a bit too loud, but our daughter enjoyed the afternoon to the fullest. She liked the selection of slides and had an action-packed day!

Historical expedition

Melidoni Cave - Crete's underground treasures

The Melidoni Cave is a real insider tip on Crete with children who are looking for adventure and at the same time want to immerse themselves in the rich history of Crete. This natural wonder, nestled in the idyllic hills of Crete, is more than just an impressive limestone formation. It is a place where legends come to life and the imagination of young explorers is stimulated.

The short but impressive walk through the well-lit tunnels and chambers is like a journey through time. Impressive stalactites and stalagmites adorn the ceiling and walls, as if they were created by nature itself to enchant visitors. And the best thing: The cave is designed to be safe and accessible even for the little adventurers.

The Melidoni Cave is not only an optical sensation, but also a place full of stories and myths that will fascinate the children. They will not only admire the natural wonders, but also gain valuable insights into the cultural treasures of the island. An excursion to the Melidoni Cave is therefore a fabulous way to spend an educational and at the same time exciting day with the whole family.

We were very impressed by the cave. The size and formation of the cave can only be guessed at in pictures and you have to experience it! It’s fascinating how this cave was formed so many years ago and was only discovered so late.

Matala and its mystical caves - an adventure for young and old

Matala, once a sleepy fishing village on the south coast of Crete, is now known for one thing above all: its impressive caves, which nestle like a Swiss cheese in the rocks of the bay. But these are not only a fascinating natural spectacle, but also witnesses of an eventful history.

For children, the caves of Matala are a real adventure playground. When exploring the labyrinthine corridors and cave rooms, they can let their imagination run wild and come up with stories of pirates, hidden treasures or ancient civilizations. It’s like diving into another world where every corner, every stone has its own story to tell.

But the caves were not always just a playground for curious children. In the 1960s, they were used by hippies as dwellings who sought refuge in Matala from the hectic western world. Even today, you can feel the free-spirited charm of the place, which combines perfectly with the natural beauty of the surroundings.

An excursion to Matala is not only worthwhile because of its caves. The golden sandy beach invites you to relax, while the turquoise blue water of the bay is a paradise especially for little water rats. Cafés and taverns also offer delicious Cretan delicacies that you can enjoy with a view of the sea.

In short: Matala with its caves is a highlight for every family that combines adventure, history and relaxation. An unforgettable experience that will delight young and old alike.

We really liked the place Matala and its vibe. We were only able to visit the caves on the second attempt, as they were temporarily closed in the heat of July. It was interesting to see where and how people lived there. However, we missed explanations about this and had to research everything online ourselves. In addition, it was sometimes a bit difficult to get into the caves with a child, as there are no stairs or railings.

Pure nature

Kournas Lake - a paradise for family adventurers in Georgioupoli

If you are visiting Crete with children, a trip to Lake Kournas is a must. As the largest freshwater lake in Crete, it offers not only an impressive natural beauty, but also numerous activities that you can experience together with your child.

Imagine strolling along the shore and watching the sun’s rays dance on the crystal-clear water surface. The lake is surrounded by picturesque mountains, which give the whole thing an almost magical atmosphere. Here you can watch the little fish swimming curiously to the surface of the water or look out for turtles together.

Would you like to be a little more active? Then rent a pedal boat and explore the lake from a completely new perspective. While you float in the middle of the lake, you can enjoy the cool breeze and soak up the beautiful landscape. And if the midday sun gets too strong, the surrounding taverns offer delicious local specialties – perfect for recharging your batteries.

But the best thing about Lake Kournas is that it offers not only fun, but also education. Tell your child about the myths surrounding the lake, or learn together about the unique flora and fauna that are native here.

In short: Lake Kournas is an absolute must for all families visiting Crete with children. Here, nature, adventure and relaxation combine to create an unforgettable experience. Pack your swimwear, sunscreen and maybe a small picnic and get ready for a day full of fun and discovery!

We really enjoyed the trip with the pedal boat on the lake. We especially liked cooling off while swimming and watching the little turtles. Our daughter was also able to enjoy the cool water on the shore. Just right on a hot summer day!
